Base64.ai Awarded U.S. Patent for AI-Powered Real ID Detection

We are proud to announce that Base64.ai has been granted U.S. Patent No. 12,525,046 for our technology titled “Real ID and Enhanced ID Detection by Artificial Intelligence.” This patent recognizes an important innovation in how artificial intelligence can assist organizations in accurately identifying compliance indicators on U.S. identification documents, including Real ID and Enhanced ID markers.

A REAL ID is a more secure form of state-issued driver’s license or identification card in the United States that meets federal security standards. Starting May 7, 2025, it will be required for certain federal purposes, mainly boarding domestic flights within the U.S. and entering secure federal facilities (like some federal buildings or military bases). If someone doesn’t have a REAL ID, they can still use other approved identification such as a passport, passport card, or certain federal IDs to fly or enter those locations; however, a regular state license without the REAL ID mark will not be accepted for those purposes, which could prevent them from boarding a flight or accessing those facilities unless they bring an alternative approved ID.

Base64.ai Patent Announcement
Why This Innovation Matters
Across many industries, organizations rely on identity documents to confirm identity, complete onboarding processes, and meet regulatory requirements. As digital services expand, these checks increasingly happen remotely and at scale, making automation essential. The technology described in this patent enables AI systems to analyze identification documents and automatically detect key visual indicators that signal whether an ID meets certain compliance standards. By identifying these indicators quickly and reliably, organizations can streamline identity verification while maintaining strong operational standards.
Who Benefits from This Technology
This innovation can support a wide range of organizations that rely on identity verification as part of their everyday operations:Public sector organizationsGovernment agencies and public institutions can benefit from tools that help staff quickly verify identification documents during digital services, administrative processes, or citizen interactions. AI-assisted verification can support efficiency while maintaining reliable identity checks.Transportation and travel organizationsAirports, transportation providers, and related service operators may benefit from faster and more consistent document verification workflows that help facilitate smooth customer experiences.Financial institutions and regulated industriesBanks, fintech companies, insurance providers, and other regulated organizations frequently verify identity during onboarding and customer service interactions. Automated detection of document indicators helps improve both speed and accuracy in these processes.Private sector platforms and service providersCompanies offering online services, digital marketplaces, or age-restricted products often require identity verification. AI-powered document analysis helps scale these processes securely and efficiently.
Supporting Trusted Digital Processes
The patented approach uses advanced computer vision and deep learning models to analyze document images and detect visual markers associated with Real ID and Enhanced ID credentials. By automating this process, organizations can:
  • Improve the speed and consistency of identity checks
  • Reduce manual review workloads
  • Enhance operational efficiency across high-volume processes
  • Support trusted verification workflows across both digital and in-person channels
Advancing Document AI Innovation
This patent represents another milestone in Base64.ai’s mission to build AI systems that understand documents the way people do—only faster and at scale.By combining deep learning with specialized document analysis, Base64.ai continues to deliver solutions that help both public institutions and private organizations modernize document workflows while maintaining reliability and trust.
We’re excited to continue developing technology that supports secure, efficient, and scalable document verification across industries.
